May or Shall — Privacy Policy

This policy covers the May or Shall service and all of its parts: the May or Shall web application, the May or Shall Microsoft Word add-in, and the May or Shall — Web Clipper browser extension. May or Shall is a litigation workspace: it stores the passages you save from your reading (“cards”) against a matter, and lets you place them into the document you are drafting.

What we collect

• Your email address. Accounts are identified by email. Signing in sends a one-click link to that address; there is no password. If you choose to sign in with Google instead, Google tells us your name, email address and profile picture, and nothing else; we do not see your Google password or anything in your Google account.
• The content you choose to save. Passages you select and save, notes you type, the category you assign, and — where the passage came from a web page — that page’s URL and title, kept as the citation. Documents (such as PDFs) you upload to a matter, and anything you write in the workspace.
• Access tokens. The Word add-in and the browser extension authenticate with a token issued to your account. Signing out of the extension revokes its token; to revoke any other, write to support@mayorshall.com and it will be revoked.

Nothing is collected passively. The Word add-in reads your document only when you ask it to insert cards, and the browser extension reads a page only when you select text on it. When you save a clip, the extension sends the selected text, your note, the page address and title, and the passage around your selection (at most 1,500 characters), so the clip can still be read later where the page needs your login. Nothing is sent if you do not save. Neither records your browsing, and the service contains no advertising or third party tracking.

The public pages of this website (the front page, Play to Demo, the Daily and its leaderboard, and the download page) count visits on our own server: which page, when, the site or link you came from, the kind of device and browser, and the approximate city and country worked out from your connection; your IP address itself is not stored. A random identifier kept in your browser lets repeat visits be counted once, and if you are signed in the visit is linked to your account. No cookies are set for this and no analytics company receives it. It is used only to see how many people visit and what they look at, and is never sold or shared.

The May or Shall desktop app for Windows and Mac checks in with our server about twice an hour. It sends a random identifier for that copy of the app, whether it runs on Windows or Mac, and its version, and, if you are signed in, links that to your account. This is used to count how many copies are in use and to keep them up to date. When you save from another app, the card records that app’s name, and the address of the page, file or email you were reading, as its source (for an app with no such address, a link that opens the app again), and the passage around your selection (a few sentences either side), so the line can be read in place later. The app reads that passage from the app you were reading in where it allows it, and for a public web page it may read the page itself, from your computer and without any login of yours. When you save from a PDF, the app also keeps a copy of that PDF in the matter you saved to, as if you had uploaded it, so the source can still be opened later; you can delete it there like any other document. If you turn on Keep the whole Word file or email in Settings (it is off unless you do), then when you save a line from Word, Outlook or Mail the app also sends the full text of that document or email, and it is kept once in the matter you saved to, so that an AI tool you have connected can read the rest of it when it drafts from your highlights. It is deleted with the matter. Turning the setting off stops any more being kept. The desktop app reads a selection only when you make one, and sends it only when you save it. The app keeps a short diagnostics log on your computer (what it was able to do, and which app a line came from, never the text you selected). It leaves your computer only if you choose Report a problem and confirm, when it is emailed to our support address with any note you add.

The Play to Demo games on the front page record each game played: when, which game and opinion, and the score. If you are signed in, the play is linked to your account. If you are not, it is linked to a random identifier kept in your browser, with the approximate city and country worked out from your connection; your IP address itself is not stored. This is used only to see how the games are used, and is never sold or shared. If you play while signed in, your scores appear on the leaderboard, which other signed in players can see, under your first name and the initial of your surname, or a name you choose. Your email address is never shown. You can change the name or hide yourself from the leaderboard at any time on the leaderboard page.

When you search from a connected assistant such as ChatGPT and your saved words find little, the service may open the public web pages your clips came from to look for the answer there. It does so without any login of yours, so pages that need one are never read; it keeps what it reads in memory for up to half an hour and does not store it. A connected assistant you have allowed can also make changes in your account when you ask it to, the same changes you can make yourself: save, edit or delete cards, create or rename matters and headings, link cards, and rename or delete documents. It asks you before deleting anything, and you can disconnect it at any time in Settings.

How it is used

Your data is used solely to provide the service to you: storing your matters and cards, showing them back to you, and placing them into your documents. It is never sold, never shared with third parties for their own purposes, never used for advertising or profiling, and never used to assess creditworthiness or for lending. It is not used to train machine-learning models.

If you use the optional AI drafting features, the relevant text from your matter is sent to Anthropic’s API to generate the draft you asked for, and is not used by them to train models. AI features can be switched off per matter.

Where it is stored

Data is held in the service’s hosted database and file storage (Railway), and sign-in emails are delivered via Resend. These providers process data only to run the service.

Retention and deletion

Your content is kept until you delete it. You can delete individual cards, or an entire matter, from the web app at any time. To delete your account and everything in it, email support@mayorshall.com and it will be removed. Uninstalling the add-in or the extension removes their stored settings from your device.

Your data is yours

You may request a copy of your data, or its correction or deletion, at the address above. Matters are private to the account that created them; no other user of the service can see them.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the date above will be updated and the change noted on this page.
